Kanji constitutes an essential component of the Japanese writing system, yet mastering and memorizing it remains a significant challenge, particularly for first-year students majoring in Japanese Studies. This study analyzes the current situation of Kanji textbooks and teaching materials, clarifies teaching methods used by instructors, and explores the difficulties students encounter in their learning process at Hanoi University. It employed a questionnaire survey with 153 first-year students, combing quantitative and qualitative analysis to identify their needs, learning habuts and the effectiveness of current Kanji learning methods. The survey results reveal that students lack supplementary resources for revision and reinforcement. On that basis, this study proposes several strategies for designing supplementary materials to facilitate more effective learning, promote learner autonomy, and enhance practical application. It serves as a useful reference for instructors of Japanese to improve their teaching quality.
