This research aims to examine the general attitudes of students in language skills and specialization classes towards L1 use in L2 classrooms, and to investigate the perspectives of students from each group on L1 use in L2 classrooms. Methodologically, questionnaires were employed where 334 students at a Vietnamese university were selected for an attitudinal survey. The results revealed that despite some significant differences, students of both class types, i.e. language skills and specialization, showed positive attitudes towards the use of L1 in L2 classrooms for different reasons. In view of the findings, the implications discussed are expected to be useful additional channels for effective strategies for L1 use in English teaching and learning in Vietnam.
