Abstract

Due to the differences in the nature of teaching foundational foreign languages and foreign languages in association with subject-matter content, instructors and learners are required to adopt appropriate teaching and learning methods, a few of which are CBI, EMI, and CLIL. The teaching of foreign languages in association with subject-matter content has been available at many universities in Vietnam, including Hanoi University, Foreign Trade University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology… This study aims to analyze, compare and
contrast the methods of teaching foreign languages in association with subject-matter content as well as to examine current practices at Vietnamese universities in general and the teaching of Business Japanese at Hanoi University in particular. This study also identifies difficulties
encountered by instructors and learners in teaching and learning foreign languages in association with subject-matter content. Solutions to improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning foreign languages in association with subject-matter content are proposed. The research findings serve as a crucial reference source for institutions that teach foreign languages in association with subject-matter content in Vietnam.
