Abstract

The article explores the issues raised in teaching Japanese-Vietnamese interpretation practice for Japanese learners at intermediate and advanced levels. The language data is the formal speeches of Japanese high-ranking officials in the fields of politics and diplomacy. Considering the distinctive characteristics of Vietnamese and Japanese languages, we suggest a number of basic techniques appropriate to the context of speech and the position of the speaker and listener(s) in the field of diplomacy. This case study brings forward the issues of translation theory in training students of Japanese-Vietnamese translation in Vietnam.
