This is a review paper on two major issues: (i) How politeness is dealt with in the 3 models of pragmatics: Lakoff, R. (1987), Leech, G.N. (1983), and Brown, P. & Levinson, S. (1987); (ii) How implicature as a means for conveying politeness can be generated in verbal communication. The information conveyed in this article, to some certain extent, can be seen as useful for English language teaching and learning, for translation, and for interpersonal communication.
