The article presents a number of approaches to the assessment of English proficiency based on the development of theories on English competence as well as shifting sands of English teaching methods. The present article provides the description, examples and analysis of different assessment approaches with connection to English teaching and learning methods which are anchored in the theories of Behaviorism, Unitary Trait Hypothesis and Communicative Language Teaching.
