“French Functional Grammar” edited by a famous French linguist André Martinet, published in 1979, represents the application of principles of functional linguistics in French. Despite some new points compared to traditional grammar, this work has yet been widely introduced in Vietnam. This article focuses on analyzing unique features in the work of Martinet and his colleagues in order to introduce a new view on functionalism. First, we examine the authors’ opinions about grammar, then present important concepts of functional grammar followed by principles of classifying monème in French. Finally, contributions of the research group to French functional grammar are discussed.
