Abstract

The study discusses the functions of newspaper headlines as a vital component of an article and compares Vietnamese and Chinese headlines from the lexical, grammatical and structural perspectives to point out similarities and differences between them. The study affirms that press translation (including Vietnamese-Chinese headline translation) serves the purpose of communication. In order to perform effective communication, functional translation theory should be applied as it is appropriate with press translation, making translated text more informative. Finally, based on the results of comparing Vietnamese and Chinese headlines and suggestions from functional translation theory, the study introduces some specific translation strategies as well as particular examples in headlines translation.
