Modality is one of the semantic and pragmatic factors which contribute to the effectiveness of communication. Therefore, decoding modal messages is crucially important to teaching and learning Italian. It creates numerous difficulties due to the differences in means of modal expressions between Vietnamese and Italian. The study aims to describe some features of Vietnamese formulaic expressions of non-factive epistemic modality and their Italian equivalents, including their positions in a sentence and their constituents. This study adopts statistical, descriptive and analytic methods and examines a corpus to discuss syntactic behaviors. This corpus consists of translated works of Vietnamese authors namely Nguyen Huy Thiep, Le Minh Khue and Vu Trong Phung, as well as Vietnamese - Italian dictionaries. This study makes a meaningful contribution to constructing a complete picture of modal expressions in the two languages.
