The paper analyzes writing practice exercises in Spanish textbooks at A1 level of the Common European Framework of References (CEFR) used at undergraduate level in Vietnam. The study compared and categorized these exercises to investigate how their text types, purposes, lengths match the CEFR descriptions. The results indicate that the text types do not quite match the criteria of the framework. The exercises mainly focused on vocabulary and grammar with limited practice on creative language use. Some of the exercises were at A2 level of language proficiency. Hence, the study proposes the use of supplementary tasks to make up for the aforementioned limitations and to enhance learners’ creativity in language use.
