RHETORICAL METAPHORS IN ONLINE NEWSPAPER HEADLINES

This paper presents the findings of a case study on rhetorical metaphors in online newspaper headlines. The dataset comprises 168 headlines from the Sports section of the online newspaper Vietnamnet, all of which contain rhetorical metaphors. These metaphors were classified categorized into six main categories: (i) form-based rhetorical metaphors, (ii) spatial rhetorical metaphors, (iii) manner-based rhetorical metaphors, (iv) functional rhetorical metaphors, (v) qualitative rhetorical metaphors, and (vi) idiomatic rhetorical metaphors. Through an in-depth analysis of the data, this study highlights the significance of rhetorical metaphors in enhancing the appeal and expressiveness of sports headlines.
