CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC FEATURES OF EXPRESSIONS DENOTING FLOWER NAMES IN VIETNAMESE

Abstract

The linguistic expressions characterizing the names of flower species in Vietnamese are a type of denotational language with linguistic features, some of which are worth being investigated. In this article, we analyze the intrinsic structural properties, formation strategies, and semantic features of Vietnamese expressions that denote the names of flower species. The intrinsic structural characteristics include the structural model and characteristics of the expression's constituent elements. The formation strategies for naming flower species in Vietnamese are clarified in terms of the reasons for identification and the basis of identification. Semantic features are mainly expressed in the method of metaphorical and metonymy translation of the auxiliary elements in the expressions. In addition, this article contributes to elucidating the nation’s distinctive mental processes and characteristics, which are reflected through expressions characterizing the names of flower species in Vietnamese.
