This article is expected to be an introduction to a series of articles on the translation of The Tale of Kieu into Russian by the author. This first article:
- Briefly describes the opportunity to translate this masterpiece of the great national poet Nguyen Du into Russian and the author’s personal advantages that guided him through the completion of the translation.
- Briefly introduces the history of translating The Tale of Kieu into different languages and experiences of predecessors in selecting different ways of translations to suit the purposes of the translations.
- Explains viewpoints and principles of translation initiated by the culture researcher Nguyen Khac Vien when he translated The Tale of Kieu into French. The author finds these principles appropriate to adopt when he translated this work into Russian.
- Narrates the process and techniques used to complete the translation.
