This paper discusses the definition and characteristics of authentic assessment as well as its application to teaching and learning academic writing for English majors in Hanoi University. Among authentic assessment types, the author mainly focuses on portfolio and student self-assessment since they have been carried out at the Language Foundation Division, English Department. The study provides a brief description of teaching and learning academic writing for English majors at the Division, the teachers’ and students’ ability to apply technology, methods to employ first-year students’ portfolios and self-assessment and to assess their initial results as well as some recommendations for further application.
