In the history of foreign language teaching, beside various views on the importance of language skills, the role of language of instruction used by teachers (mother tongue or foreign language) has also caught significant attention. Lecturers at the German Department, Hanoi University often employ different methods. However, there has been little research on students’ viewpoints of those methods.
This study provides an overview of the current German teaching and learning at the German Department, Hanoi University as well as the role of students’ mother tongue in teaching grammar. On this basis, the author conducts a survey on the students to investigate their assessment of the language used by teachers in teaching grammar. The author hopes to identify some factors affecting students’ evaluation of language of instruction and propose recommendations for future German teaching.
