FORMS AND MEANINGS OF THE MEMORIAL DEIXIS 더 IN KOREAN

Abstract

The deixis 더 in Korean is considered temporal deixis 었/았/했 (past), 습니다/습니까 (present) and 겠/ㄹ 것 (future) whose function is to express ‘reminiscence’. However, reminiscence deixis 더 in Korean does not have any proper equivalents, either function words or content words, in Vietnamese. During her teaching, the author conducted a study on Vietnamese learners’ habits of using Korean and identified the reluctance to use this reminiscence deixis. The author, therefore, felt the need to dig deeper into this deixis and explain to learners about its meaning (including both its referential and emotive meanings) in Korean to facilitate their use.
