According to Lakoff and Johnson (1980), metaphor is pervasive not just in language but also in thought and action. Metaphor is widely used in daily conversations as well as in politics, culture, education and science. The article investigates the use of the conceptual metaphor NATION IS A BUILDING in English and Vietnamese political discourses, and points out the general similarities in the expression of this conceptual metaphor in both languages.
