Nowadays, there is a large number of materials on test practice and examination preparation to support learners' self-study for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Such documents have provided a relatively sufficient system and explanation of intermediate and advanced Japanese sentence structures. However, in order to further facilitate Japanese teaching and help learners have systematic understanding of Japanese syntax, based on recent publications of Japanese researchers, we conducted a study to categorize combination formats in Japanese in accordance to grammatical-semantic functions. This paper discusses the results of our research.
