THE SPEECH ACT OF QUESTIONING IN SOCIAL COMMUNICATION ON MATERIAL OF THE VIETNAMESE FAIRY TALES

Abstract

In communication, various kinds of direct questions can be used. There are direct questions which can be performed by either explicit performative utterances or primary performative utterances. Vietnamese fairy tales used both types of performatives when reflecting real-life communication. However, the results of the study show that there is only one question formula being performed by the explicit performative utterances and 3 question formulae (including their variants) being expressed by primary performative utterances. This is the habit of speech act of question in the old days.
