COMMUNICATIVE ROLES IN KOREAN HONORIFICS IN CORRELATION TO VIETNAMESE

Abstract

Communicative roles in Korean honorifics include subject, object, addressee and speaker. The speaker uses equivalent expressions of honorifics based on the interpersonal relationships between communicative roles. Honorifics in Korean – an agglutinative language, are expressed in both aspects of grammar which are vocabulary and syntax, whereas, those in Vietnamese – an isolating language, cannot be identified through syntax. In contrast, in Vietnamese, function words of status such as auxiliary verbs, particles, exclamatory words are uttered to promote the communicative roles which cannot be found in the expression of honorifics in Korean.
